Not a stock photo of a sky

Every star is plotted from a real catalogue, projected for your date through the same spherical astronomy — date to Julian day, to sidereal time, to altitude and azimuth at your coordinates — that a planetarium uses. Stars below the horizon that night are left out, because they genuinely weren’t up. The moon gets its own calculation: its actual phase and its actual position for that hour, not a generic crescent icon.

Two chapters on two different nights, or in two different cities on the same night, draw two different skies — because they were different skies.

In memory

This preset carries its own name rather than reusing "yours" or "theirs," because it usually belongs to someone the keepsake’s owner is not. It recurs, so the date on the card moves forward each year while the sky stays the one from that night.
